Hartford History Center Services

The Hartford History Center provides research services for those visiting in person, online, and via telephone. Researching in person is free; services for those contacting us online and by phone are free for the first half hour. When visiting the History Center in person, you will be asked to fill out a Project Description Form.

To request photocopies or scans, or when taking your own photography, please submit a Permissions and Reproductions Order Form. All orders must be prepaid. Please see our fee schedule for current reproduction and use charges. 

Photocopies and Photography

We offer photocopy services for researchers and allow self-shot photography, for research purposes only (per provision 108 of the copyright code), with the permission of the History Center staff. In some cases, such duplication will not be allowed due to donor restrictions or preservation concerns. Self-service copying may be allowed dependent on the condition of the materials. 

Patrons who wish to quote from unpublished materials must request permission from copyright holders. Information about copyright holders and how to locate them can be found at the U.S. Copyright Office and at the Library of Congress

Patrons who wish to publish images of materials held by the Hartford History Center, Hartford Public Library may be subject to service fees.

The Hartford History Center cannot give you legal rights to publish material (except for those collections where the library holds these rights). Such rights must be obtained in a formal, legal statement from the owner, heirs or executors of any materials you wish to publish. The Hartford History Center, Hartford Public Library acts only as owner of the physical originals (of manuscripts or prints, etc.) and takes no responsibility for any possible infringement of copyright laws in the publication of material.

Please credit the Hartford History Center, Hartford Public Library in all publications in which Hartford History Center materials are used.

Scanning

Customers must complete and sign a request form for all materials they wish to have scanned. Hartford History Center reserves the right to make decisions about what materials can be scanned based on the condition of the materials or copyright restrictions. Scanned images may not be published without the approval of copyright holders. Thumbnail, or low resolution images may be provided to customers for private research purposes. Use of personal scanners in the Hartford History Center is not allowed.

Personal Digital Camera Use

The use of personal cameras in the Hartford History Center is managed by the staff of the Hartford History Center on a case by case basis. Photographs taken by researchers are for private research and not for publications. Entire books or manuscript boxes (or substantial portions of either) will not be digitally reproduced unless otherwise authorized. Digital camera use is subject to the material’s condition, copyright laws, donor-imposed restrictions, collection specific restrictions, and other conditions and arrangements for preservation. Under no circumstances may researchers photograph any part of the reading room, Hartford History Center staff members, or other researchers. Flash photography is prohibited.

Published Digital Collections and Copyright

Digitized collections are made accessible for purposes of education and research.  Hartford History Center, Hartford Public Library has given attribution to rights holders when possible; however, due to the nature of archival collections, we are not always able to identify this information.If you hold the rights to materials in our digitized collections that are unattributed, please let us know so that we may maintain accurate information about these materials.

If you are a rights holder and are concerned that you have found material on this website for which you have not granted permission (or is not covered by a copyright exception under US copyright laws), you may request the removal of the material from our site by submitting a notice, with the elements described below, to hhc@hplct.org.  Please include the following in your notice:

1. Identification of the material that you believe to be infringing and information sufficient to permit us to locate the material;
2. Your contact information, such as an address, telephone number, and email address;
3. A statement that you are the owner, or authorized to act on behalf of the owner, of an exclusive right that is allegedly infringed and that you have a good-faith belief that use of the material in the manner complained of is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law;
4. A statement that the information in the notification is accurate and made under penalty of perjury, and; and
5. Your physical or electronic signature.

Upon receiving a notice that includes the details listed above, we will remove the allegedly infringing material from public view while we assess the issues identified in your notice.
