Abstract:
Correspondence (1881-1883) regarding the construction of the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch, and proposals for construction (1882, 1884). Correspondents include architects A.D.F. Hamlin of McKim, Mead & White; C.F. Luce; and F.C. Withers. Also writing are William G. Thompson, Mayor of Detroit; William W. Ellsworth of New York; James G. Batterson, President of The Travelers Insurance Company; and Frances Goodwin. Col. George P. Bissell was Chairman of the committee selecting the design of the arch. In addition to the architects listed above, proposals were received from Brunner and Tryon Architects, J. Cleaveland Cady, and others. George Keller's winning design is not included, though there is a typed copy of the "specifications of the mason and stone cutter's work and materials required" for his design.
