Abstract:
A collection of photographs taken by Hartford Times photographers. BOX 1 Includes aerial photographs (regular size), taken in 1971, of Hartford, UConn Medical Center and Holy Family Monastery in Farmington, G. Fox in Enfield, and Bradley International Airport. Oversized images include the construction of Interstate 84 through Hartford, New Haven redevelopment in the 1950s, Hartford redevelopment (Windsor Ave. near Bellevue Square, 1971, earlier photos of Pleasant Street, Main Street, and Windsor Street), and construction of the Hartford Civic Center. Constitution Plaza photos date from the 1960s and 1970s. Undated photos show ships on the Connecticut River. Photographs (regular size) show Presidents Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, and Dwight D. Eisenhower, each speaking at the Hartford Times building. Racing photos show two eras of car racing, and one image of Greyhounds racing in Plainfield (1976). One photo shows three men at United Aircraft, and another shows the corporation's 1968 turbo train. Seventeen photos by Einar Chindmark are foldered together. Taken in 1962, they include images of the Wadsworth Atheneum, the Cathedral of St. Joseph, and other views of Hartford. One photograph is of actresses Katharine Hepburn and Katharine Houghton. Four images depict the crowds at the annual Hartford Times Carol Sing. Others include the former Lord's Hill (now Asylum Hill) Reservoir (on the site of what is now The Hartford Financial Services), the Hartford Hospital fire, the East Hartford dike in the 1955 flood, the Governor's Mansion in 1968, a 1957 view of the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company building, Windsor Avenue near Bellevue Square in Hartford (1971), and a portion of a photo of Enfield and East Windsor rescue crews working at a car crash site. BOX 2 Is all oversize photographs, most of which are aerial. The bulk are Hartford, and date between 1959 and 1972. Non-Hartford subjects are Bishop's Corner in West Hartford and the Millstone Point Nuclear Power Plants in Waterford. BOX 3 photos are also oversized and show the damage caused by the flood of 1955 in the Collinsville section of Canton, the Pine Meadow section of New Hartford, and the surrounding area.
