A collection of interviews with 21 U.S. theater directors. Bartow's incisive questions spur equally insightful answers from such major figures as Zelda Fichandler of Arena Stage, youthful maverick Peter Sellars, Lincoln Center's Gregory Mosher, Long Wharf Theatre's Arvin Brown, Broadway master Harold Prince, Sam Shepard-interpreter Robert Woodruff, and 15 other directors currently plying their trade in New York or in regional venues. Discussions range over each interviewee's theatrical origins, directing methods, and artistic philosophies. Career histories appended. MAB.

Choice Review

Collections of anything--essays, stories, plays, or, in this case, interviews--are difficult to categorize and often impossible to evaluate. There are always limits and limitations. Somewhere along the way a voice will be raised in protest as to why so and so or such and such was omitted. Editor Bartow has here done the art of directing a great service in gathering interviews from a diversified array of directors working in the contemporary theater. As prologue, quotes from Alan Schneider and Tyrone Guthrie (giants in the field) introduce insights, via question and answer, into the craft of 21 working artists. The text tends to focus on many directors who have worked or continue to work in regional theaters where, in fact, most of the exciting and innovative theater is taking place. Emphasis is also upon directors influenced by or representative of more avant-garde theater--experimentalists and reconstructionists. The range is vast, the questions evocative, and the responses, for the most part, illuminating. Although not presently a working director, Richard Schechner's omission is notable, since he pioneered in the theater of the sixties and made significant contributions to directing and performance theory. Each director's history is appended as a useful apparatus. Some of these may be faulty because of a director's inability to reconstruct the production history of certain plays accurately.
